Eating healthy in Korea??

Tomorrow will mark 1 week that we have been here in Korea. Another week and a half to go before we have to leave all the delicious food and glorious weather!

But that’s just the problem… there’s too much delicious food! My brothers wedding is 2 weeks (!) after we get back to Malaysia. After all the effort I have put in to eat healthy and exercise, I really don’t want to go and blow it all now.

If you have been to korea, you will know the perils of dieting. To explain, let me tell you how the restaurants work here. They all specialise in a certain dish. For example, one might sell BBQ beef. But then that is pretty much all they sell. So you either eat the beef or go hungry! There’s never a nice Caesar salad or grilled chicken on the menu. So unless you are eating at home all the time, I would say it is almost impossible to eat healthily! So rather than eating clean, I’m just trying to eat less. Let’s see how that goes.

I did go for a run this morning though. And a hike this afternoon. And exercising here is much more interesting. There are rivers and streams which almost always have a running track beside them. Nice scenery, great weather! Ahhh… So I’m hoping the Active minutes are balancing out the food I’m eating. (That’s what I keep telling myself anyway!)

To be honest, though, korean food is not all that unhealthy. Of course, they have their car share of fries and sugary foods. But when it comes to dinner time, meals are often well balanced.

This evening we ate dakgalbi, which consists of spicy chicken mixed with cabbage, sweet potato, onions, rice cakes and a sauce. This is all I cooked in a wide shallow pot. Then a bit of rice is mixed in at the end to soak up all the juice. I know for a fact that this is way healthier than burger and chips!

Eat less. Exercise more. That’s what I’m trying!

Going to Korea!

It is currently Sunday night and we are already taking the first steps in getting ready for our imminent korea trip to see Milly’s Korean grandparents and family!

I bought my korean SIM card online yesterday, which I need to pick up when I arrive at Incheon airport. We also just chose an Airbnb for the short vacation we will take with hubby’s parents to Chuncheon. And now, lay in bed, I’m supposed to be making a list of things I need to buy and then a list of things I need to pack. I find it’s always good to have lists then you don’t over do it. And also, you can add to the list when you suddenly remember something. So that’s what I’m going to do.

If you haven’t heard, me and Milly are going a few days before daddy, then he will follow us later on due to work schedules. So we are just taking the stroller, a backpack and my diaper bag (daddy can bring all the heavy things later!) Because off this, I need to be very careful in what I pack so that I’m not lugging around a ton of weight on my back.

I have absolutely no experience of flying alone with Milly, but I am quite excited to accept the challenge. I have been googling tips from other mummies and the main thing that they almost all advise is ‘arrive early and take your time’. So I’m planning on sticking to that. Do everything slowly and don’t get stressed.

I’m also wondering about filming. Will I really be able to film everything when I have a 19-month-old to look after. Hmm… we will see. I’ll try my best.

As for now, I need to get started on that list then get a good nights sleep before my last day at work tomorrow before the holiday.

Night night (as Milly would say) ☺️

No Time To Be Weak!

One of the hardest things I have learnt since becoming a mother is that even when you are at your weakest, on your knees, praying for a break, you can’t stop. You can’t just say ‘ok, I’m out for the next 3 hours. I’m going to go and get a hot chocolate, put a girly movie on, then take a long nap.’ No, no, no.

And I’m having one of those days. I’m not feeling too great, I’ve got way too much running through my head and I’m going to bed but all I can think about is ‘how many times is Milly going to wake up tonight?’ And recently, she has been waking up every couple of hours. I’m not sure why. I have tried so many different tactics to train her to sleep through the night but to no avail. It has even got to the point now where me and baby are sleeping in another room just so hubby can get a good nights sleep. I think the past year and a half of running on less sleep has finally caught up with me.

And it’s in these moments that’s you have to just stare at your little princess and remember that any sacrifices made for her and her well being are so incredibly worth it. I could wake up 10 times during the night and she still makes me smile when we finally get up in the morning.

And that is amazing. The fact that this little human can make you feel so happy and content. It’s a wonderful feeling and one of my favourite things about being a mummy.

How could you not smile at this gorgeous face?! 💕

Where’s my husband?

Don’t worry. I know exactly where he is. But when it comes to Thursdays, we seriously hardly see each other. It’s all for the best though and here’s why…

Daddy leaves for work at 7:15am and gets home at about 5:45pm, after which we have a quick bite to eat then at 6:30 I have Zumba which I love so much! I would do it everyday if I could (and if it was free!) For me, it is the most fun workout you can do. It incorporates dance, body strengthening and stretches and oh boy does it make you sweat! That’s an hour so I get home take a shower and bye bye! Daddy is off for basketball. He has recently started playing again and really enjoys it. I encourage it because it’s great exercise for him and it gives him a chance to just have some time to let off steam and sweat all the negativity out, if you know what I mean. Daddy gets home around 11:00pm, by which time me and Milly are zonked!

At first, I was a little worried if I would be uncomfortable with this routine but I really enjoy it. I love going out to exercise and I love seeing daddy fresh and rejuvenated the next day! It’s a win win! Plus, he gets some alone time with Milly while I go out, which I know he loves!

Aaaaand it’s helping us stick to our health goals of exercising regularly.

And I think things like this work when a husband and wife are willing to share the load and let each other take a bit of time off. I was talking to another mummy the other week and she said that since her baby was born (around 4 years ago), she has never had any alone time! I respect their choices but I can’t help but give a sigh of relief knowing that daddy will encourage me to go out and do something if I want to.

And that’s how it works every other day when we go to the gym at our condo. I go for 30 minutes, then he goes for 30 minutes. Then we come back refreshed and enjoy the evening. Ahhh… love you daddy! ❤️

Waking Up… yawn!

Daddy leaves for work at about 7:15am. He has offered in the past to slip out the door in silence but I much prefer him to wake me up and say goodbye. So, normally, I’m awake. On the very rare occasion that I’m absolutely shattered, I may drift back off to sleep. But if you’re waiting for me to explain all the many things I get done early in the morning then you are about to be very much disappointed. I was not a morning person before I had a baby, and despite my best efforts, I can’t seem to change that. I basically just lay there for a while. Milly sleeps in our room so I check on her and make sure she is still asleep. Then it’s back to the bed or the sofa, a few flicks through Instagram, a scroll down the news, maybe check my emails.

And then, on a good day, sleeping beauty will wake up around 8:30. (Yes, that’s a whole hour of me laying on the bed.. don’t judge!) She gets herself off the bed, pulls open the door and staggers out in to the living room, still slightly confused as to what is happening. She then looks around, and after spotting me, the first thing she wants is a long squeezy cuddle. Every day. I love it! During this cuddle, she seems to slowly wake up to the world around her, realising that she is wasting precious playing time, and signals for me to put her down! Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

So starts the day! Good morning world!

Family Health Goals

My brother is getting married in September. We have a short 2 months to go before we get all dolled up for a sweltering Malaysian wedding haha. (I remember screaming at someone, I was that hot on my wedding day!) So in light of this, we have decided to give ourselves 2 months to get in to shape. And by shape, I mean a less round shape then I am right now

For me, it’s more about eating less and losing the last lingering bit of belly fat that has somehow clung on to me since being pregnant. For daddy, it’s eating more and building muscle. I wish my goal was to eat more, I’d be in shape in no time!

So I got on the phone to my aunt in England who is a personal trainer. Since I’m still nursing Milly, she gave me some tips on safely cutting back while still taking in enough calories to maintain the milk factory.

First of all, food! She suggested ditching bread and dairy completely. That means no toast for breakfast, no cakes, no sandwiches, no milk, no cheese, no yogurts. You get the picture. And to be honest, it’s been a few days now and I’m seeing that life is not all that bad without them. I did fancy a glass of milk before bed yesterday but I ended up just having some water and forgetting about it. Oh, and I should have only a handful of carbs in a meal. I.e. NOT a massive plate of rice or a HUGE bowl of pasta. This is working out quite well because, since daddy is trying to eat more, I just hand over half my carbs to him! Hehe. Win win!

Secondly, exercise! So previously, I did go to the gym once or twice a week. And I join a Zumba class every Thursday, which I’m still doing because I love it! But the gym is the issue. I would do mindless jogging or a few rounds on some random weights. To be honest, I didn’t really know what I was doing and no obvious results was getting me down a bit. Clearly, I was doing it all wrong. I have now switched to high intensity interval training (HIIT). You do this by exercising in bursts then letting your body rest before repeating it over and over. So for example, 30 seconds sprint, 30 seconds rest. Times 10 rounds! No kidding, after the first day of doing this, I really felt like I had exercised. How does it work? Basically, it keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. 12 minutes of working out is my kind of thing! After that I just do a few rounds of plank, a few weights and I’m done! 30 minutes per day max! Perfect!

Lastly, apples! A bit of a weird suggestion from my aunt. Eat an apple within 30 minutes of waking up. She swears by this and says it curbs any sweet cravings you will have during the day. I actually only remembered to do it once so far. I’m going to try and do it more to see if it really works. She said I should take the apple to bed so that it’s there when I wake up so I can eat it straight away. Worth the shot, I say.

So, in summary:

  • No bread
  • No dairy
  • 12 mins HIIT exercise
  • Apple in the morning

Ok. I can handle this! Let’s do it!

I’ve taken some ‘before’ pics but I think I would only be willing to post them alongside the ‘after’ ones hehe.

Meanwhile, daddy is looking all pumped up after like 3 days in the gym. Totally not fair. And Milly? Well she is doing just great by the looks of things. She LOVES drinking water which I think keeps her healthy and hydrated in this crazy heat.

Stay tuned for updates.

Say cheese! (Oh no, no cheese!!!)

Wednesdays are ‘Grandma Day’!

Wednesdays are definitely a highlight of Milly’s week. Why? It’s grandma day! (Because I go to the office on Wednesdays.)

This is the day when she can basically get anything and everything she wants. She gets a full day of unadulterated attention from her second mummy. (After all, that’s what a grandma really is, isn’t it?) My mum is possible, no definitely, the best grandma in the world. Milly adores her. I wish I had a picture of her face as grandma walks through the door on a Wednesday morning. Pure joy!

Throughout the day I get sent pictures of Milly. In the bath, on the potty, eating breakfast, strutting down the street with her sunglasses on! I love it! I’m so happy knowing that she doesn’t miss me as much as I miss her.

Style on point!

My mum is a great teacher and I often come home to a new skill, a new letter of the alphabet or a new song learnt. It’s so sweet to see that they had a great day! Today was ‘baa baa black sleep’. Not the words, but the actions. So super cute. Hopefully I can get a video of it and include in one of our YouTube videos. I think my mum has slight withdrawals on Thursday haha but we so see each other almost everyday so it’s ok.

Since having a baby, I have come to appreciate how much hard work my mum put in bringing me up. And I now appreciate all the love she has for Milly and I hope to be a great mum just like her!

Here’s to grandmas all over the world! We love you! ❤️

Again! Again!

Mummy’s Time…

Well it’s not often that I get some ‘me-time’. And I’m totally ok with that because I absolutely adore being with my family and I plan to keep it that way. But… when I need my nails doing/ hair cutting/ massage, it is good to know that I have those around me (mostly my mum) who are willing to take Milly for a while and let me enjoy my time.

So I’m on the way looking forward to a good pampering but, the thing is, when I get there, I find myself looking at the clock wondering if my princess is okay! I was once told by a mummy that she loves going to work so she can have some ‘me-time’! Well, I only go in to the office 1 day per week and I know I would much rather be at home playing with Milly, even though it’s true that it’s more tiring! The flexibility of my work allows me to do most of it at home, so when Milly takes a nap, I use that time to get it done.

Back to the point, I love having a pampering session but I love it more when I get home and see my little girl run up to me and smile as if she hasn’t seen me all week. That is seriously the best feeling!

Plus, my nails are looking pretty good right now, don’t you think?

(I always get my nails done at Cass Nail Salon, Sunway Giza. They have a promo for first time customers. Check them out on FB!)
